Gone are the days when people could be glued to the screen by the action sequences. The story of innocent people being driven into the gory world of crime has been shown in so many films that they seem to be incapable of arresting audience’s interest any more. Today, it is the era of movies depicting the dilemmas of modern life and the complexities of human nature. Romantic movies, as always, have secured their own place and prominence even in this time.
Despite being aware of the recent trend, director Ashuu Trikha have proved himself audacious in taking up the castaway genre of bloodshed theme for his new movie ‘Baabarr’. The movie rotates around the theme of crime but what makes the movie to stand out is its unusual treatment of the subject matter. It shows that the evil clutches of crime do not even spare the small kids who once trapped could never find their way out. It sends an alarming note that the world of crime exists eternally in some or other form.
The movie speaks about the way the law and order machinery of the world is being shattered by the wicked plays of the cops, politicians and gangsters. And the one who suffers incessantly for no crime of his own is the common man. Unlike the popular trait among the film makers to base such gangster movies in Mumbai, Ashuu Trikha takes the unconventional setting of Uttar Pradesh as the location for his movie. The movie is not the hard-core bloodshed, yet may not be very easy going for the faint hearted people.
The main story line starts with the 12 year old boy, Baabarr picking up a gun and shooting a man in the broad day light on the streets of Aman Gani. With no mark of repentance the boy walks down the street holding the gun intact in his hand. The first crime drains him of all the emotions and leaves him as a dry man with no feeling.
The boy grows up committing one crime after another and becomes the terror of the place. Soham Shah does all justification to the role of grown Baabarr. Killing people became as easy for him as smashing a fly. His domain of terror grew to such a dimension that the Government had to think for a mighty force to crush this devil’s head. Mithun Chakraborty comes in the scene in the role of Encounter Specialist S.P. Dwivedi who is entrusted with the responsibility to arrest Baabarr or to kill him.
The film has a marvelous script; and the man to be credited for this is Ikram Akhtar. Dialogues are powerful to convince each sequence of the movie. The flow of the movie is superb and at no point you are left wondering why did this happen.
Soham Shah has done an incredible work in the movie with his natural and spontaneous acting. Besides, his simple look with no make-up look of a star makes him more justifiable to the role. Doubtlessly, Mithun Chakraborty is as good as in any of his previous movies. Other characters like Om Puri, Tinnu Anand, Shakti Kapoor, Mukesh Tiwari, Vivek Shaq and Pratima Kazmi have contributed one of their best performances to the movie. Abbas Ali Moghul has done a commendable job in handling the action sequences. Cinematographer, Suhass Gujarathi also deserves special applaud for his work.
To put in the nutshell, Baabarr stands out as a powerful movie with great story line and memorable characters. The movie may bring back the castaway genre of bloodshed.
